UK Ministers Direct Stormont on Framework Delivery

Stormont faces pressure to implement framework

Ministers in London urge Northern Ireland Assembly to move forward

Ministers in London have directed Stormont to deliver on the framework agreed upon in the New Decade, New Approach agreement. The directive comes as Prime Minister Boris Johnson returns to London after meeting with Northern Ireland's political leaders.

The framework, which was agreed upon in January 2020, includes a range of measures to restore power-sharing in Northern Ireland. However, the Assembly has yet to implement the framework in full.

In a statement, the UK government said that it "expects and supports the full and timely implementation of the framework." The government also said that it is "committed to working with the Northern Ireland Executive and Assembly to support them in delivering on this important agreement."

The directive from London is likely to put pressure on Stormont to move forward with implementing the framework. The Assembly has been deadlocked for months over a range of issues, including the Irish language and the legacy of the Troubles.

It remains to be seen whether the Assembly will be able to overcome its differences and implement the framework. However, the directive from London suggests that the UK government is losing patience with the political stalemate in Northern Ireland.
