The Meaning of "Heso" in Anime
The Belly Button's Greeting
In the Japanese language, "heso" literally means "belly button." However, in the popular anime series One Piece, the Skypieans—inhabitants of the sky island Skypiea—use the term as a greeting.
Skypiea: The Sky Island
Skypiea is a unique island located high above the Paradise section of the Grand Line, the primary setting of the One Piece story. It is visited by the Straw Hat Pirates, the main protagonists of the series, during the Skypiea Arc.
The Skypiea Arc
The Skypiea Arc is the second and final arc of the Sky Island Saga, the 13th arc in the One Piece series. The Straw Hats arrive on Skypiea in search of gold, but soon become embroiled in a conflict with the island's ruler, Eneru.
Heso as a Greeting
The Skypieans use "heso" as a greeting to welcome visitors to their island. This is a play on the Japanese word for "navel," which is also "heso." The use of "heso" as a greeting is a unique aspect of Skypiean culture, and reflects their close connection to the natural world.
